Mixed use residential and retail scheme combining new build with historic refurbishment
This mixed use residential and retail scheme in conjunction with Drum Housing combined new build with the refurbishment of historic high street buildings including what was an old bakery containing original ovens and various details of note.
The project was managed from initial design conception, through detailed design development, planning and successful site delivery. In addition to the usual planning sensitivities encountered on all market town high street developments there was the added complication of closing access from the High Street to the Crown Gap car park, which required careful consideration and negotiation with local businesses and townsfolk.
The affordable residential units were designed and constructed to a very high standard and their situation, on Alton’s main High Street provides easy pedestrian access to all local amenities.
The retail units now provide Alton with a very popular hardware store, print shop and ‘Subway’ fast-food outlet, and to the rear both private and public parking.
